VCSU Wins Collegiate Trap Shooting State Championship

VCSU defeats NDSCS in team division shoot-off
JAMESTOWN, N.D. (VCSU) – The Valley City State University Trap Team won a state championship at the 2025 North Dakota Collegiate State Trap Tournament on April 26, taking home its second state title in the team division of American Trap over the last three years.
VCSU defeated North Dakota State College of Science in a one-person shoot-off after they finished the team division competition tied with a score of 456. Ty Awender was selected to represent VCSU in the shoot-off and secured the team division state championship by breaking 9 out of 10 targets. The NDSCS competitor broke 8 targets.
“I’ve been on both ends of winning and losing shoot-offs, and while I was ready to embrace either outcome, I’m glad I was able to take home the win for the team,” said Awender.
VCSU’s top five competitors posted an impressive combined score of 456 out of 500 at during the team division competition. That tied VCSU with NDSCS for first place, setting the stage for the exciting shoot-off to determine the state championship.
With the victory, VCSU claimed the 2025 North Dakota Collegiate Trap Championship in the team division, marking their second team title in three years. VCSU previously won the team division title in 2023. The Vikings had an individual division champion in 2024.
The 2025 State Tournament was held in Jamestown, N.D., and included teams from VCSU, Bismarck State College, University of Jamestown, NDSCS, University of Mary, Dakota College at Bottineau, Dickinson State University, and North Dakota State University competing in various events. The overall state championship was claimed by NDSCS.
