Mathea Jablonsky
Mathea Jablonsky has always had a passion for working with children. With a broad degree choice, she landed on a career that would help her continue to work with the group of people she loves most.
Hometown: Barnesville, M.N.
Year: Senior
Major: Psychology & Human Services
Activities on campus: Track & field, SACC, and psychology and human services club
What made you choose to major in psychology and human services?
I have always been inspired to work with children in some capacity. I began to babysit at a young age and the experiences I obtained led me to pursue a degree in Psychology and Human Services. However, I didn’t initially know how I wanted to use my degree in the future, which is why it was important for me to explore a field with broad opportunities. Eventually I found that I was most interested in pursuing a career in pediatric occupational therapy due to its focus on helping and supporting children reach their full potential and developmental milestones.
What has been your favorite memory so far?
Honestly my most favorite memories from VCSU were in the dorms during my freshman year of college. My freshman year is when I met my best friends who I continue to make memories with today. Living in the dorms, everyone was so eager to meet each other. It was always so fun and exciting to interact with new people.
Favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot on campus is upstairs in the CFA. It is the perfect spot to relax and do homework as it is always so quiet, and I love the natural light that comes in through the windows.
Why VCSU?
I graduated high school from a small town, and so finding somewhere that replicated that feeling was important to me and VCSU had drawn me in due to the hometown feel. I knew I would find comfort in going to a small school with an intimate student to faculty ratio. It was a priority of mine to be able to have supportive faculty around to help if needed. I was also drawn to the friendly atmosphere and supportive community that Valley City offers.
Any advice for those considering VCSU?
My advice to someone who is thinking about attending VCSU is to explore the campus and community. The close-knit community offers students an intimate campus experience with many opportunities to explore. It is important to familiarize yourself with the area to determine if it is the right fit for you. If you value a close relationship with professors, a supportive community, and an intimate learning environment, VCSU may be the perfect fit.
